Antenna in smartphone case

Daesan Electronics develops antennas in case highly durable and thinner by 30%

A technology to completely mount antennas in the rear case of a smartphone (a mobile phone equipped with functions equivalent to a computer) has been successfully commercialized. This technology creates an antenna mounted in a mobile phone case that is far more durable and thinner by over 30% than the existing products. This new technology will be helpful in implementing thin smartphone designs.

On the 29th, Daesan Electronics (CEO: Ma Sang-yeong) announced that the company had developed two types of antennas, RSA (rear direct single injection antenna) and RDA (rear direction double injection antenna), which are LTE (long-term evolution), GPS and Bluetooth antennas built inside the rear case of a smartphone.

RSA is a product where a metallic antenna is mounted into a 0.2mm groove on an injected mobile phone case. This product has design and price competitiveness because both the rear case and antenna can be created as individual modules.

RDA is a product where the antenna pattern is not visible at all. The antenna in RSA is hidden under a thin injection layer measuring 0.2mm in thickness.

The two products are mounted with antennas made with pressed metal, and thus have far superior durability than the conventional printed-type antennas. The metal pattern does not break even when the smartphone is drooped or applied with external force.

The case thickness can also be decreased by more than 30% than existing products. The lowest limit of thin film processing with ordinary injection machines is 0.4mm. However, Daesan Electronics is capable of producing thin films measuring 0.15 – 0.2mm in thickness as the company has secured a process technology by directly remodeling injection machines. At present, the conventional smartphone cases built in with antennas are made with a thickness of around 1mm. Daesan Electronics can create them in a thickness as small as 0.6mm using its thin film injection technology.

RDA and RSA have outstanding price competitiveness because these products do not require an additional antenna manufacturing process and a follow-up process, such as UV coating.

Daesan Electronics has secured patents on the source technologies for RSA and RDA and is planning to apply for international patents within the year. The company aims at creating high added values by developing antenna design and materials technologies in addition to process technology.
Daesan Electronics commenced antenna design technology development by opening an auxiliary research center in Suwon, Gyeonggi-do in July. Daesan Electronics will also accelerate materials technology development in the long run.
¡°Price competitiveness will be enhanced by more than 30% than existing products once a collective system for antenna development, manufacturing and marketing is established,¡± explained Daesan Electronics CEO Ma Sang-yeong. ¡°We will develop competitive power as high as the leading antenna makers by continuously developing innovative products like RSA and RDA.¡±
